Celebrating Texas Swing Live at Talking Stick Resort

About the Show

In 1974, Asleep at the Wheel moved from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas, encouraged by Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm. The city became their long-time home and identity, with bandleader Ray Benson noting their pride in representing Texas and Western swing music worldwide.

Over the years, the band’s lineup has constantly evolved, with more than 100 members since 1970. Following recent changes after their 50th anniversary tour, new members—including fiddler and vocalist Ian Stewart—have joined, continuing the group’s tradition of renewal.

Their latest album, Riding High In Texas (their 32nd release), reflects both the new lineup and a tribute to Texas. Featuring collaborations with artists like Billy Strings and Lyle Lovett, the record blends classic and lesser-known Texas songs with influences from beyond the state. Benson describes it as a heartfelt “love letter” to Texas and a fresh chapter for the band.

With a mix of tradition and new energy, the album signals a strong future for Asleep at the Wheel as they continue touring and recording.
